Imaging Preparation

ULTRASOUND

Abdominal Ultrasound
This includes: Liver, spleen, gallbladder, kidneys, and pancreas
Exam time: 30 min
  • Do not eat or drink eight hours before exam.
  • Take medications with a small sip of water.
  • If you are diabetic, please take your insulin.
  • Take Gas-X night before appointment and morning of appointment with sip of water.
Abdominal Ultrasound with Doppler
This includes: Abdominal aorta, renal artery Doppler, biliary system
Exam time: 30 min
  • Do not eat or drink eight hours before exam.
  • Take medications with a small sip of water.
  • If you are diabetic, please take your insulin.
  • Take Gas-X night before appointment and morning of appointment with sip of water.
Pelvic Ultrasound – Transabdominal only
This includes: Uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, urinary bladder
Exam time: 30 min
  • Eat normally.
  • 1 1/2 hour before your exam, drink 32 ounces of water.
  • Do not empty your bladder before your exam.
Bladder Ultrasound – Pre & Post Void
  • Hold your bladder for at least one hour before your exam
  • Do not Void

MRI Studies

Please inform your physician today if you:
  • Are claustrophobic or think you may be claustrophobic (afraid of enclosed spaces). • Are allergic to any medicines.

All MRI examinations are conducted within a magnetic field, so please ensure that you do not have any metallic objects on your person at the time of the examination. Examples:

  • Jewelry • Pagers • Coins • Pocketknife • Magnetic strip cards, (ID badge, and ATM, debit or credit cards) • Watches • Eyeglasses • Paper clips • Nail clippers • Beepers • Hair pins • Money clips • Tools
  • Bras with metallic underwire, fasteners or hooks • Cell phones • Safety pins • Straight pins • Writing pens

The MRI technologist may request that you change into a clinical examination gown if there is any concern regarding interfering material on your clothing. A changing room and a secure locker are available for your clothing and/or personal items.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to appointment time for paperwork. If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call the Center for Medical Imaging (706-922-6699) at least 24 hours before your appointment. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
MRI Studies WITHOUT IV Contrast:
  • No additional prep needed (please refer to initial instructions on MRI front page)
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to appointment
MRI Studies WITH IV Contrast:
  • In ADDITION to initial instructions (refer to MRI front page), patient should be
  • NPO (Nothing to eat or drink) 4hrs prior to study.
  • Should have kidney function testing performed within the last 60 days
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to appointment
